so what should the selectors be judging, how well the kids trial or how they play in match conditions, personally i'd suggest the latter.
choosing 40 odd kids plus goalies to trial is not fair on selectors, particuarly having it over three sunday mornings, imho i think a list of half that is enough given there are now 4-6 matches at the champs for the kids to be seen by selectors.
are the selectors at the trials the same who were at the jsc ?,if not than form at the jsc is insignificant.

Form at the JSC gets you selected to trial but your trial form has to carry more weight. The trials are theoretically made up of the best players. If a player plays well in the JSC but cant reproduce that form in the trials the selectors may assume that this is due to the higher standard in the trials compared with the JSC.
The JSC still has great value in that exposes a large group of players to a level of training, coaching and competition they may not get with their clubs if they are not selected for victoria. In regards to selecting victorian teams the JSC gives the selectors a chance to see all the players under tournament conditions. Having trials after the JSC is the best way to ensure players are not disadvantaged by playing for a poor performing JSC team and on the flip side that players are not given an unfair advantage from having played in a succesful side. Players will always get missed, but hopefully having the JSC followed by trials will result in everyone getting as fair a shake as possible.

All the Victorian trials I have been a part of rely heavily on gameplay. Drills are typically used only for goalkeepers and for warmups.

Note Survey on HV website. Junior Hockey officianados, have your say or forever hold your piece.
Interesting question perhaps missing. Should JSC be linked to squads for State selection, or should it be just a State Championship.
