What is the ruling of an umpire coaching a game while he/she is on the field umpiring at a state league level?

Cheers for that boonie!

Now my next question, what is to happen if this occurs during a game?

Ah...I've got a feeling I know where this is going and what match it refers to. Given one of the umpires didn't turn up, why wasn't a suitable replacement found from the spectators? Of course, I wasn't there, but I'm just trying to think about the circumstances under which this topic has formed.

Regardless, if indeed the coach of a team umpired as well, then penalties probably should be enforced.

aphex your on the money, it's probably a question the home team that day should answer? By the way had a look at your new ground this morning, very nice am I right in saying (just by looking at it) that it's pretty fast for a new surface compared to others?

One would assume that the home team has some capacity to provide a badged umpire (of relatively decent quality) in case a rostered umpire doesn't turn up?

However, there could be arguments about any inherent bias from a home spectator asked to umpire as well. At any rate, I have no idea how HV would approach this sort of situation. I'm sure if there was a feeling that the chap who stepped in to umpire did a poor job, a strongly worded letter to HV might be on the cards?

As for our ground, it's getting better and better every week. We only had two weeks of preseason on it, unfortunately but with a bit of moisture on it prior to a game, it's a very good surface. Much better than our previous one, that's for sure.

I'll be there from about 5:30pm if you want to come and have a hit on it.

Obviously a coach umpiring a game is to be avoided, but if it is to happen thats not the worst thing that could happen, even if it does raise suspicions. What is bad is when said coach/umpire is giving directions to the bench about positions and plays whilst the ball is down the other end of the field...

Not to mention losing the plot and sending off numerous opposition team players and supporters immediately after

Speaking as a spectator this did happen at the game in question and upset some of the players and spectators close to the umpire as he was observed telling his players where to position on the next attack or pointing directives.  When apposing players argued about his remarks during the game two players were sent off.  I understand it was unprofessional that only one badged umpire turned up when two were rostered (especially at State League level) and it was up to the home team to supply the umpire.  However if a coach choses to umpire they must umpire with fairness to both teams and pass their coaching duties to another person for the match, not shout directives to their players and stand on the field in an unfair position to approach his players and observe the game as an obvious breach of the rules.  It was also observed that people in the crowd were experienced enough to umpire or badged(more than one person) however it was claimed there was noone else to do the duty.  It would be interesting to see what the opposing team will do about this if anything, would it have affected the game result?

I reckon it's the SL3 match between Monash and Casey. There's a note on the match report that indicates that one of the rostered umpires didn't turn up.

Pure speculation on my behalf, though!

I just watched a match in WM3N against Werribee where the Yarra Valley coach regularly stood behind the YV umpire and gave him instructions on what decision to make, how many times did the umpires have to confer for the slightest of decisions , shame on you Yarra ,play the games by the rules and enough of the bullexcrement.
