Well, the first week of searching for the Holy Grail has passed and what a weekend it was.
Let’s start off with Women’s SL1, with arguably the upset of the SL finals series happening today when Hawthorn defeated Greensbrough to progress straight to the Grand Final. Upset of the finals series is a big call given that its the first week of the finals, but The Hockey Show is never afraid of making the big calls.
Greensbrough now has to regroup and front up next week against the Bombers, who put in a biblical performance to comprehensively smash the Weller girls into the water filled turf at the hockey centre today, winning 4-0.
In the mens SL1 comp, Greensbrough marched on their merry way to what would be a third consecutive premiership, disposing of the Hawthorn boys 4-1. One of the Hawthorn boys was heard to say after the game, “At least we can’t play any worse.” Once again, the usual questions surrounding Hawthorn men’s record in finals will no doubt come up this week. Can they make one of the biggest comebacks since Lazarus and rise from the dead to claim another grand final berth?
In the second semi, Camberwell defeated Waverley 1-0 in what was an absorbing contest.
The eastern suburbs clubs do battle next week playing for the right to attempt to knock off Greensbrough, who are looking the goods again.
In Womens Metro 4 North, Footscray Blue defeated Essendon Ladies 7-2 in a goal fest, while Altona defeated Swinburne 3-0 to progress straight to the GF. Mens Metro 4 West also turned out to be a sinful affair as Greensbrough W defeated Old Melbournians 5-3. Epic battles await next week to determine the remaining grand finalists..
In other news, entrance fees were again hiked for finals, it was bloody freezing at the hockey centre and Geelong won the footy by another ridiculous margin.
Its also junior grand final week next week, so best of luck to all the juniors playing in grand finals.
Bring on preliminary finals week!
Get out and support your club!!

Cannot make it down this year from the sticks so would love to see some of the games…….

4pm Sunday, prime time for mens SL1, rubbish HV, rubbish.
September 9th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
what time do you want it exactly?!?!? what’s your definition of prime time then?
September 9th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Around 2pm, when they don’t have to turn on the lights
September 9th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
2pm sat…
September 9th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
you may not have noticed but women play hockey too and they actually play their SL1 GF at 2pm on Sunday. maybe a gender change for you or you could just stop moaning?
as for sat WA GURU, that’s when the Pennant grades play their GF’s in Victoria.

Yeah, what is hv thinking? How does this market our game in any way? Why can’t other games be played after prime-time SL1?
Nobody wants to sit outside at the SNHC till 6pm… brrrrrrr …
September 10th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I’m not agreeing with you. I’m stating that women play the game too and the timeslot they play their SL1 GF is 2pm.
I think there are much bigger issues than this in the sport at the moment and you might want to take your ‘man-blinkers’ off and have a look at them?
September 10th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Anon
Its science, we have bigger brains. Lets go back to women on one day and men on the other at 2pm. No one will turn up to the womens game and the crowd will be at the mens. You can keep 2pm Sunday, we will have Sat 2 pm.

Next year i’ll do a better job….

Settle people…we all can get along. I have an idea…why doesn’t the Hockey Centre not raise the admission fees for finals and we would all be happy. Frankly I don’t care when the games are…maybe one of the games could be at 1pm and the other at 3pm???? What a concept…
September 11th, 2008 at 10:33 am
good idea (not!) yep let’s split the men’s and the women’s fianls up…hang on maybe we could have seperate associations for the men’s and the women’s, hell the juniors too! that’s genius…does anyone know if it’s been done before.
Hint – the above contains sarcasm in in most obvious form. if you are not able to get it please see a doctor and for prescription of a sense of humour.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
The point of having mens and womens on seperate days is interesting. Dont be a clown and link it to having seperate associations for mens, womens and juniors to make your argument more credible. The GF debate is a seperate issue.
SL4, SL3, SL2, SL1 mens finals on one day womens on the other. People would still turn up to the mens, not sure about the womens.
This isnt going to happen, nor should it. Point is if the mens game is the draw card play them at a reasoanble time they are used, not 6pm like the rumour is.
September 11th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Why are women playing anyway, get back in the kitchen!
September 11th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Anon – you have a crap sense of humour. Lift
I think the idea of mens on the sat and womens on the sunday is a good idea as you can potentially get more people having two good days. Clearly there will be more on the saturday but maybe we could discount the rate for the sunday ie continue the subsidation of the women

Man…pull your head in. This website is becoming a joke if all it is used for is for people so slag each other off. And now we enter the sexism issues. Thought this was a Hockey Website?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:18 am
I’m sure Boro folk will be wrapped to have to pay to get into GF’s on Sat and Sun!
September 12th, 2008 at 10:33 am
As someone has already posted, “4pm Sunday, prime time for men’s SL1, rubbish HV, rubbish.”
Given the background of the HV CEO this time slot does not make a lot of sense. 4pm, caught in no man’s land, too far from Lunch and too far to Dinner.
Obviously Catering revenue was not a consideration.

September 12th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
borough already go sat and sunday for the pen teams. burn
September 12th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
it’s only a few die hard hockey folks that go along to watch the GF’s if their club’s not in it anyway so it doesn’t matter what time you put it on!
September 12th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Back to hockey, who will win? Will Hawthorn be able to shake their finals hoodoo? And if they do get through, can they face up to borough, who seem to have their measure when it counts?
Do Camberwell stand a chance of getting any further into the finals or will it be the same teams fighting it out?
September 16th, 2008 at 11:24 am
anyone who must explain sarcasm in delivery is a moron. prime time is saturday 2pm. whether men or women play separately or on the same day, the men get 2pm saturday and the women get bumped wherever they fit next. anon, you belong in the laundry. it is the simplest of decisions to make yet the imbeciles who run our competition can’t even get that right.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
When did 2pm Saturday become prime time ?
Was there a vote ?
Perhaps the state league one men and their respective clubs should stop and realise that they are not the only people playing hockey in this state.
September 19th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Prime time. Look at every other successful sport. Saturday arvo is the prime time. Best conditions to play, best hockey delivered, therefore hopefully more people watching, results in sponsorship opportunities.

make my dinner now – thanks for the feedback. much appreiated.
FYI the AFL prelim finals were both played at night. prime time?
September 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
When is the AFL gf played…………….
this is the time when you say point taken
September 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
Prime time TV is different to prime time getting a crowd to a hockey match. The AFL GF will move to night soon enough, but for hockey crowds it is around 2-3pm.
